A True Metalsmith
Anita Roelz’s creative process begins in a quiet state of daydreaming, shaped by the natural world around her. Falling snow, well-loved books, Maine beach stones, wind-swept sand, rippling water from her kayak, and the reflective colors of Montsweag Bay all leave lasting impressions. Textures found in bark, leaves, and shoreline landscapes are remembered and later translated into expressive metal surfaces.
Her work is formed from recycled silver and gold wire, raw metal sheets, and ethically sourced gemstones chosen for their vivid colors and organic shapes. Using a mix of cherished antique tools and newer additions, Anita forges each piece on a pitted, 150-year-old anvil whose character is embedded in the finished work. Through hammering, heat, carving, oxidizing, and hand polishing, she sculpts metal into textured forms that echo sand, bark, and woven fabric. Each piece carries its own distinct character, shaped entirely by hand.
Rooted in authenticity, Anita creates elemental, organic jewelry with a bold, raw, and sometimes urban presence. Her work is designed to be worn daily—strong, expressive, and enduring—becoming part of the wearer over time. Not delicate or timid, these pieces invite attention, spark conversation, and carry the energy of their making. Every hammer blow tells a story. Anita Roelz is, at her core, a metalsmith.
