Balfour Farm Dairy

Balfour Farm is a 100-acre organic farmstead and dairy creamery in Pittsfield, Maine, best known for its award-winning organic cheeses and non-GMO-fed salami. At its core, however, it is a working farm rooted in daily rhythms shaped by the seasons, the land, and the animals that live there. Since 2006, the farm has grown through hands-on learning, trial and error, and a deep commitment to doing things the right way—producing real, organic food with patience and care.

The farm is guided by a belief in honest food. Pesticides, herbicides, artificial colorings, and additives have no place in its process. Instead, Balfour Farm relies on the natural give-and-take between land and animals to define the quality of its products. As a certified organic operation, the farm takes pride in being careful stewards of both the land and the livestock, honoring the balance that makes truly farmstead food possible.

Being farmstead means that everything begins and ends on the farm—from raising the cows and pigs to crafting cheese and salami by hand in small batches. The animals are treated with the same care and respect given to family; the small herd of Normande cows is milked just once a day in recognition of the work they do. Sustainability is central to the farm’s mission, with most of its energy generated off-grid through solar power. In partnership with Maine Farmland Trust, Balfour Farm has also been preserved as a “Forever Farm,” ensuring that this land will remain dedicated to agriculture for generations to come.
