Two Daughters Sea Salt Co.
Rockland, ME
Company owners Ian and Emily began making sea salt in 2019 as Christmas gifts and quickly developed a deep appreciation for early Japanese wood-fired evaporation methods. As the process evolved, Ian was able to leave his VA job to care for the children between salt batches while continuing to refine production techniques. Emily oversees sales at local markets and flavors the salts using herbs from their garden and Vietnamese peppercorns; she is also known for producing exceptional smoked salts. By leaning into their individual strengths, they have created a balanced and sustainable business model.
Seawater is harvested only from the cleanest areas of Penobscot Bay, well away from harbors and municipal runoff, and is hauled by hand. The water is boiled over a wood fire and reduced by more than 90 percent into a concentrated brine—a delicate process that requires careful attention to avoid scorching. The brine is then sun-cured through solar evaporation, leaving behind naturally formed salt crystals.
In 2024, following a renewed faith journey, the business began its transition from an LLC to a nonprofit. With their family’s needs met, the company now directs funds raised toward supporting various charitable causes.
